St Albans & Harpenden Covid Vaccination Service
The 12 GP practices across St Albans, Harpenden and surrounding areas are working together to offer a community focussed, at scale Covid Vaccination service from 2 central locations in St Albans and Harpenden. We are keen to offer the vaccination to our community as quickly as possible. Your GP practice will contact you as soon as it is your turn to be vaccinated, please do not call your practice to discuss vaccination, until you have been invited.
The GP Practices involved in this project are;
Abbey Health PCN: The Maltings Surgery | Lattimore & Village Surgery
Alban Healthcare PCN: Grange Street Surgery | Midway Surgery | Parkbury House Surgery
HLH PCN: Harvey Group Practice | The Lodge Health Partnership | Hatfield Road Surgery
Colney Medical Practice
Harpenden Health PCN: Davenport House Surgery | The Elms Medical Practice | The Village Surgery
Your GP practice is currently working through the first phase priority groups and will be starting to vaccinate care home residents, care home staff and patients aged over 80. They will work their way down the priority groups, in line with national guidance and vaccine availability and are unable to prioritise patients.
Vaccine delivery to our sites
Whilst we are working together, our two distinct site locations St Albans & Harpenden both receive vaccine from a central NHS supply chain. Unfortunately the deliveries by NHS England are not aligned and the roll-out will be slightly different at each site. You can be assured that both sites are working incredibly hard to ensure that their most vulnerable patients receive vaccinations as soon as is practically possible.
Not yet been invited
If you, a loved one or someone you care for is in the priority age group of 80+ and has not yet received an invitation by your GP to have a vaccination, we will be making contact in early January. We will use a variety of communication methods including phone calls, text messages and letters, in line with the contact details we hold for patients, to invite you in. Due to limited vaccine deliveries to St Albans only so far, your GP has only been able to invite a small cohort of patients to date, this will increase in January and we look forward to welcoming you for your first dose.
Alternative Vaccination Locations - outside of St Albans & Harpenden
You may receive an invitation to book your Covid-19 vaccination appointment now, as part of a national wider NHS scheme, this service is outside of your GP practice plans and is operated externally.
We are aware you will have to drive to approx. 45 mins to receive a vaccination at one of these sites and the advice within this letter does say you can choose to ignore it.
We would like to assure you that if you choose to ignore this letter inviting you to book a location that requires you to travel some considerable distance for a vaccination, you will still be invited to attend St Albans or Harpenden for vaccination by your local GP practice team.
If you have already received your first dose locally, you should wait until your GP practice invites you in for your second dose.
Why do I have to wait for my 2nd (COVID-19) vaccine appointment ?
Due to new advice from the UK Chief Medical Officers, your second coronavirus vaccination appointment will be rescheduled, if you received your first dose in St Albans, before 31st December 2020.
The new medical advice is that the second dose of the vaccine remains effective when given up to 12 weeks after the first dose, and should be given towards the end of this 12 week period.
While you will need two doses of the vaccine to get the best long-term protection from the virus, you will still have a significant level of protection at 22 days after you received the first dose. The new guidance will also help ensure that as many people as possible benefit from the first dose of the vaccine as soon as possible.
Please be reassured that there are no safety concerns in the new guidance, and it will not impact on how effective the vaccination is in protecting you from Covid-19 once the course is complete.
You do not need to call your GP Practice
Your practice will call you to reschedule or book your second vaccine appointment, which will be approx. 12 weeks after your 1st.
It is important to note that even when you have received your vaccine, you must continue to follow government guidance on social distancing and wearing a mask, as well as the additional measures in place in your area.
We apologise for any inconvenience, and look forward to seeing you for your second vaccine dose at the right time. For more information on the vaccine, please visit www.nhs.uk/covid-vaccination
